Happy Easter Busy Bees

For some reason I had the crazy notion it would be a great idea to make Lachlan's pre-school class - The Busy Bees - some easter biscuits as a special treat.

After checking with his teacher, Aunty Chris, and getting the nod of approval that such an idea would be fine to do, I thought great, this will be fun and easy and the kids will love it.

Unfortunately, I didn't factor in to my preparation time frame, a three and a half hour power outage. Arrrrghhhh!!!!! It goes without saying that Botswana Power Corporation were not my favourite people last night when the power went out at 6pm and stayed off till 9:30pm. I could have screamed!!!

Deep breath Sheridan, just ice the biccies tomorrow. And that's exactly what I did.

They probably weren't as pretty as they could have been, if I'd had Mr B's helpful assistance, as was planned. But I think they still came out ok. And if all the yums and "nom nom" noises I heard in Lachlan's class after I delivered them, were anything to go by, I think the kids thought they were pretty cool too.

Happy Easter Busy Bees :)

The Easter Bunny

It's not quite Easter yet, but the Easter Bunny came to visit our house today ...

Sadly, he didn't bring any easter treats with him :(

But he sure did look cute!

Time To Say Goodbye

Yesterday we had to say goodbye to our beloved Bots pets - Torty 1, Torty 2 and Torty 3!

Since adopting them from Aussie friends who returned to the sunburnt country, we have enjoyed having them as part of our family. In all honesty they have been the best pets ever. So low maintenance, but a great way to teach LL to look after and care for something else.

Sadly, two of the three tortoises have grown enormous over the last 12 months and our tiny grassed area was no longer able to sustain their hunger, despite the whole lettuce I was putting out every single day as a supplement.

The destruction ... :(
As they have been hand reared by humans since babies I thought it unfair to release them into the bush. They are so used to people that two of them had taken to following me around the yard in the hope of scoring some food.

So instead I found them a new home. And if LL's little friend Kathleen's enthusiasm and excitement yesterday when we dropped them off was anything to go by, I think we made the right choice.

Playball Star

Guess who got the playball trophy today at school ??? ....

To say he was excited would be an understatement. I was reminded for the rest of the day, and no doubt more of tomorrow, that he had in fact got the trophy!

It was so special that the trophy had to be present for both lunch and dinner.

Proud Mummy (and Daddy!) here tonight :)

Images of Things to Come

Loved watching these two play together today. They're doing it more and more lately as Miss J is more mobile and learning everyday. They have a new game where LL will scooch around on his bottom too, following Miss J wherever she goes and doing what she does. They laugh and giggle together, and think they are both hilarious!

The fun play you see above was sadly short lived as Missy Moo is not herself the last few days and began to get very cross with it all, spreading playdough cutters far and wide.
Yet, it was a sign of the play to come I think. And I liked it!

An Early Easter Treat

Lately I've been feeling inclined to try new things. I saw a quote on pinterest the other day, that suggested even if you aren't an overly creative person, try new things anyway and see what happens. Obviously those weren't the exact words, but anyway it struck a chord with me, as I typically like to have a go at something even if I know it'll turn out rubbish.

Oh wait ... I just found it:

Take a risk and get your creativity on!

Not rocket science, but it got me motivated and so I decided to have a go at these ...

I followed the recipe out of my favourite baking book ... (this is such a great book!)

Easter here in Bots is not the same as in Australia. There is no inundation of hot cross buns or chocolate easter eggs in the shops. We don't see them every which way we turn as we peruse the aisles of the local supermarket. I have noticed the odd tray of hot cross buns at my local SuperSpar but they are usually a day or two old, not fresh and spongy as I like them.

So there was only one thing for it; to have a go myself. And it wasn't as hard as I thought. Yeah sure there were a few steps to it, but really it was pretty straightforward (Mr B helped just a little - he's better at kneading than me!).

And TA DA ...

I overcooked them just a smidge. My oven can be a little tricky and I usually need to cook something at least twice before I get the temperature and timing right.

But believe me, they still tasted pretty good!

A certain someone had to do some filtering ... (and it wasn't just the little guy!)

I'll definitely be making them again.
Maybe next time with some choc chips, just to keep the other three happy.
Try anything new this weekend?

Merilicious

As a family we don't eat out a lot. This is not to say there aren't places to go in Francistown to do so, we are just typically more than happy to eat at home. When we do go out for a bite of lunch though, we usually go to Merilicious.

Merilicious is owned and run by a friend of mine, here in town.

I clearly remember when Meredith first raised the idea one night at a bookclub meeting. Did we think she should start a cafe at her garden centre. I think we all practically dived on her shouting a resounding YES!!! At the time there were only two other cafes in town, and neither of them were overly kiddie friendly. We need somewhere we can take our kids Meredith, I said. Somewhere it's ok if they don't just sit at the table, where they might be able to play in some dirt, or even have a swing to ride on, or a play gym to climb.

Meredith took on board a lot of what her friends told her and opened a great cafe that has fast become a popular spot here in town.

When we returned to Francistown from Australia after having Miss J, I was desperate to get out of the house at any opportunity. I think Mum, LL, Miss J and I went to Merilicious twice a week for about a month. We even celebrated Mum's birthday there with a yummy lunch.

It's just a great place to enjoy some morning tea, breakfast or lunch, outside in the fresh air, in a beautiful surrounding. Doesn't hurt that they make an awesome potato salad and thai beef/chicken wraps. Oh and their strawberry smoothies are delicious!

You can find Merilicious on facebook.
